Three panels read from left to right: God presenting Eve to Adam in a green Eden with strange fountains and animals; a vast garden where hundreds of small nude figures feast on giant fruit, ride birds and animals and climb into transparent spheres; and a dark hell of burning cities, musical instruments turned into torture devices and a hollow tree-man with a face. Bosch painted the triptych in 's-Hertogenbosch sometime between about 1490 and 1510. Its first recorded owner was Henry III of Nassau in Brussels, and it passed to Philip II of Spain, which is why it is in the Prado. The outer shutters show the earth on the third day of creation in grey. Its meaning is still argued over; most read it as a warning against the pleasures of the flesh.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A wide triptych of hundreds of tiny figures, so it needs width and a viewer who stands close: a hallway, study or long console at 24×36. Black frame, dark or neutral wall; it is not a bedroom picture and does not pair with much.
