A dense bouquet in a glass vase stands in a rounded stone niche, its shadow curving across the inside of the arch, and a single yellow rose lies beside the vase with its head projecting past the sill into the viewer's space. Ambrosius Bosschaert painted it in 1618, late in a career that began in Middelburg, where he was among the first painters anywhere to make flowers a subject in their own right. The architectural frame follows the exact proportions of the panel, so that without its ornate frame the picture could pass for a real recess in a wall; the rose breaking the edge is the trompe-l'oeil clincher. Striped tulips, then a costly rarity, carried an undertone of vanity for Dutch viewers, since the bulbs were objects of speculation. The painting entered the Danish royal collections in the eighteenth century and is in the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
