A small glass vase with prunts holds a tulip, a rose, an iris, a yellow fritillary, a daffodil, bluebells, forget-me-nots and lily of the valley, standing on a ledge before an open sky with a hint of a town in the far distance. Insects land on the petals and one crawls toward a fallen carnation; two seashells on the ledge, a cone shell from the Indian Ocean and a painted snail from Cuba, were the kind of exotic goods arriving in Dutch ports through the East and West India companies. Bosschaert painted it on copper in 1619, the year he moved to Breda, and the flowers could not have been painted from a single real bouquet since they bloom at different seasons; he composed from drawings and florilegia. The panel measures under thirty centimetres high. It is in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, a gift of Mr and Mrs Edward W. Carter.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
