A well-dressed couple under a single umbrella walk toward the viewer across the wet cobbles of the Place de Dublin, near the Gare Saint-Lazare, in a Paris of wide new boulevards and tall uniform apartment blocks built under Baron Haussmann. A lamp post splits the canvas, umbrellas recede in every direction and the figures at the edges are cropped as if by a camera. Caillebotte painted the huge canvas in 1877 and showed it at the third Impressionist exhibition, where it stood out for its smooth finish and careful perspective, closer to academic practice than to the broken touch of Monet. The scene is modern life observed with detachment. The Art Institute of Chicago acquired it in 1964, and it is among the most visited paintings there.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Grey cobbles, umbrellas and uniform apartment blocks give this a cool, orderly mood for a hallway, entry or office at 24×36, where the perspective pulls the eye down a corridor. Black frame on a pale grey wall; it suits modern, spare rooms.
