Three people linger over lunch on the terrace of the Maison Fournaise, the restaurant and boat-hire on the island at Chatou that Renoir treated as a second home. Beyond the railing the Seine glitters, with a rower and a four-oared boat passing on the water. Painted in 1875, it is a small, informal picture compared with the great Luncheon of the Boating Party that Renoir would make at the same spot in 1881, but it has the same ingredients: dappled light, idle talk and the river traffic of a summer afternoon. The paint is quick and loose, with the figures and the foliage barely separated from one another. It is signed at the lower left. The painting came to the Art Institute of Chicago through the collection of Bertha and Potter Palmer, the city's pioneering collectors of Impressionism.
