The limestone ridge of Mont Sainte-Victoire rises above the valley of the Arc river near Aix-en-Provence, with a railway viaduct cutting across the fields and a single pine slicing the view in two. Cézanne painted it between 1882 and 1885 from the hill behind Montbriand, his sister's property, and it is the most fully worked canvas of his first sustained campaign on the mountain he had known since childhood. He had written to Zola in 1878 of the beautiful motif seen from the new Aix–Marseille train as it crossed the valley. The viaduct reads almost like a Roman aqueduct, recalling Poussin, and the picture sets out his ambition to make of Impressionism something solid and durable like the art of the museums. Louisine Havemeyer owned it, and it came to the Metropolitan Museum of Art with her bequest in 1929.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The exhibition-poster edition sets the complete image above typography designed in-house.
Is Mont Sainte-Victoire and the Viaduct of the Arc River Valley in the public domain?
Yes. Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; the two larger sizes are also offered framed. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Mont Sainte-Victoire and the Viaduct of the Arc River Valley painted, and in what medium?
Mont Sainte-Victoire and the Viaduct of the Arc River Valley dates from 1882–85 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 65.4 × 81.6 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
For a standard three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 inches reads as a single statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pairing. The print's proportions follow the original, so a landscape-format painting is wider than it is tall.
