Three farm labourers sit at a table in a dim room playing cards, pipes in their mouths, while a fourth man stands behind them watching and a boy looks on at the right. Cézanne painted five versions of the subject at the Jas de Bouffan, his family's estate outside Aix-en-Provence, in the early 1890s, using local farmhands as models and making many studies of each figure. This version, with four figures and a child, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art; larger versions are in the Barnes Foundation, and the pared-down two-figure compositions are in the Musée d'Orsay and the Courtauld. The players are as still and solid as the bottles on the table, and the series is often read as his tribute to the dignity of provincial life.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A dim room of still, solid figures that suits a study, den or dining room with dark wood, at 24×18. Black frame on a warm ochre or deep green wall; the quiet mood is better kept away from brighter company.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×18. Prints at 16×12, 24×18 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
