Cézanne's largest, last and most ambitious treatment of nude figures in a landscape, worked on from about 1898 until his death in 1906 and left unfinished. The nude women are arranged in two groups beneath trees that lean inward to form a great triangle, with a river and the far bank between them; the figures are built from the same patches of blue, ochre and green as the trees and sky. Bathers had occupied Cézanne for decades, and this canvas, over two and a half metres wide, gathers the whole series into a single, monumental statement, deliberately timeless rather than fashionable. It was owned by Leo Stein before the Philadelphia Museum of Art bought it in 1937 with funds provided by Joseph E. Widener. Its planar figures and triangular structure made it a touchstone for Matisse, Picasso and the generations that followed.
