A tilted basket spills apples across a rumpled white cloth, beside a bottle, a plate of stacked biscuits and more fruit scattered on a table whose edges do not line up. Cézanne painted it around 1893 and signed it at the lower left. Nothing here obeys a single viewpoint: the bottle leans, the basket pitches forward, the tabletop breaks where the cloth crosses it. Still life had been dismissed as a minor genre since the Neoclassical era, which is partly why Cézanne took it up; it gave him a blank slate on which to test how a picture could be balanced from unbalanced parts. The result rejected naturalistic representation in favour of multiple perspectives and pointed directly toward Cubism. The painting belongs to the Helen Birch Bartlett Memorial Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago.
