The Queen of Sheba, crowned and in red, descends the steps of a classical palace to the boat that will carry her out to the ships waiting in a harbour lit by the rising sun; porters hurry chests down to the water and the light spreads across the ripples toward the horizon. The Bible has her crossing the desert by camel to visit Solomon, but Claude sent her by sea, and the subject is known only from his inscription on a step. He signed and dated it 1648 and painted it with Landscape with the Marriage of Isaac and Rebecca for the Duc de Bouillon, general of the papal army, whose round tower emblem appears on the right. Both were among the first pictures bought for the National Gallery in London in 1824 from the Angerstein collection; this is NG14. Turner painted Dido Building Carthage in answer to it and left it to the nation on condition it hang alongside.
