The great domed church of Santa Maria della Salute fills the left of the picture, and beyond it the Grand Canal opens into the basin of San Marco, with gondolas and sailing craft on the water and the Dogana at the point. Canaletto painted this view around 1730, when he was at the height of his trade in views for foreign visitors, on a canvas just under seventy-five centimetres wide. It is one of several treatments of the subject he made over the years, the entrance to the canal being the first thing a traveller arriving by sea would see. The painting belongs to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, where it forms part of the Robert Lee Blaffer Memorial Collection, the gift of Sarah Campbell Blaffer, and hangs in the Audrey Jones Beck Building. It shows the crisp light and architectural precision that made his name across Europe.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
