On Ascension Day the Doge of Venice sailed out in the gilded state barge, the Bucintoro, to cast a ring into the Adriatic in the annual marriage of the city to the sea. Canaletto shows the barge returning to the Molo before the Doge's Palace, the water crowded with gondolas and the quay with spectators, the Piazzetta and the Library behind. He painted the ceremony many times; this large canvas, more than two and a half metres wide, dates from the late 1720s, and variants are in the Royal Collection at Windsor, Dulwich Picture Gallery and the Uffizi. It was bought for the Hermitage in St Petersburg in the 1760s together with his Reception of the French Ambassador, and in 1930 was transferred to the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, where it remains. The Russian painter Fyodor Alekseyev copied it, and the copy is in the Russian Museum.
