The Piazza San Marco opens out beneath a high sky, the basilica and campanile closing the view, with small figures crossing the paving and the arcades of the Procuratie running down either side. Canaletto painted it in 1742 to 1744, late in his Venetian years, as the pendant to the Entrance to the Grand Canal from the Molo, and both were bought by an Earl of Carlisle for Castle Howard in Yorkshire, where views of Venice by Canaletto were already noted in the drawing room by a visitor in 1745. The pair stayed at Castle Howard until 1938, when they were sold to the heiress Barbara Hutton, who gave them to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1945. The precise, luminous handling of the square is the manner English buyers wanted, and it is the reason his name became shorthand for Venice itself.
