Travellers stop at a shop on a steep mountain road, where a hanging sign advertises its speciality, Oroku combs, and sellers sit on the matted floor among the goods. In front, a porter with a towel round his shoulders sets down a box as travellers in green and white hats walk past. Stone-weighted roofs sit below the road, and misty grey mountains fill the valley at the left. This is print thirty-five of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi), c. 1835–36. Keisai Eisen, who designed it, began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige completed it. Narai was the thirty-fourth station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
