A daimyo's procession files along a road, its men in flat hats and green and blue coats, led by bearers carrying two tall spears topped with white plumes. Two travellers kneel at the left as it passes. Tall pines rise from the fields, a thatched teahouse stands at the right, and the white walls and keep of a castle show behind under a pink and cream sky. This is print fifty-four of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō and later Kinjudō, c. 1835–37. Keisai Eisen began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige, who designed this sheet, completed it. Kanō was the fifty-third station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; the English title is descriptive, and impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
