A huge rounded mountain covered in green fills most of the sky, and at its foot the post town of Sakamoto stretches along a narrow blue stream crossed by small plank bridges. Its houses have yellow, blue and grey roofs, the street is busy with travellers and a horse, and at the right the land falls away to distant blue peaks under a pink horizon. This is print eighteen of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō and later Kinjudō, c. 1835–36. Keisai Eisen, who designed it, began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige completed it. Sakamoto was the seventeenth station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; the English title is descriptive, and impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A great green mountain over a town of yellow and blue roofs, under a deep blue sky, for a living room, study or office at 24×36 in natural wood. It pairs with Hiroshige's Yui: Satta Peak for two roads dwarfed by mountains.
