Judith drives the sword through the neck of the drunken Assyrian general Holofernes while her maid Abra pins him to the bed, both women with sleeves rolled up and faces set, as blood arcs across the white sheets and spatters Judith's breast. Artemisia Gentileschi painted this second, larger treatment of the subject around 1620 in Rome, where she had returned after seven years in Florence and could study Caravaggio again; her first version, from about 1612, is in Naples. It was made for Grand Duke Cosimo II de' Medici, who died in 1621, and its violence so unsettled the Florentine court that it was kept out of the gallery; Artemisia had to call on her friend Galileo Galilei to extract the payment she had been promised. Today it is one of the most visited pictures in the Uffizi in Florence and the work most closely identified with her name.
