The deed is done. Judith, with the sword at her side, pauses and looks over her shoulder toward some sound beyond the tent, while her maidservant packs the severed head of Holofernes into a bag; the two women are caught in the moment of listening before their escape back to Bethulia. Artemisia Gentileschi returned to Judith throughout her career, from the early beheading in Naples and the great Uffizi canvas to several of these quieter aftermath scenes, of which a celebrated example is in Detroit. This smaller version dates from about 1640, when she was working in Naples, and it treats the story as suspense rather than slaughter. It has been in Oslo since 2022, when it entered the collection of the Nasjonalmuseet, Norway's national museum, which notes that she was one of very few women in the seventeenth century who lived by their art.
