Under a crescent moon a great he-goat, crowned with vine leaves, presides over a circle of witches who offer him emaciated infants; one holds up a healthy baby, another a skeletal one, and tiny bats cross the night sky. The small canvas is one of six scenes of witchcraft that Goya painted in 1798 for the country house of the Duke and Duchess of Osuna, enlightened patrons who collected such images as satires of popular superstition and of the Inquisition that fed on it. The flat, bright moonlight, the toy-like goat and the half-comic faces make it a very different picture from the black painting of the same subject he would make on the walls of his own house twenty years later. It belongs to the Museo Lázaro Galdiano in Madrid, with its companion The Spell.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
