The lawn of The Limes, William Moffatt's house at Mortlake on the Thames, seen in late afternoon as the sun sets straight down the river. Two ivy-covered elms frame the view, long shadows stripe the grass, and a gardener's ladder, a hoop, a doll on a red chair and an open portfolio lie where they were dropped by figures gone to watch the Lord Mayor's barge pass. Turner painted it for Moffatt in 1827 and showed it at the Royal Academy that year; it is one of two views of the terrace he made, the other an early-morning scene. The light, built up with heavy impasto where the sun spills over the parapet, reflects the change his first stay in Venice had worked on his vision. Andrew Mellon acquired it in 1920 and gave it to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1937.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
