Cattle graze beside the lake at Wivenhoe Park, the Essex estate of Major-General Francis Slater Rebow, under a sky of broken cumulus; at the far left the general's daughter rides in a donkey cart. Rebow, a close friend of Constable's father and the painter's first important patron, commissioned the view in 1816. Constable finished it that September, and the fee helped him marry Maria Bicknell the following month. It was shown at the Royal Academy in 1817. The clarity is almost photographic, yet Constable quietly rearranged the site to balance trees, meadow and water, and the precision of the brushwork in animals, birds and figures gives the small details real weight. The painting came to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1942 with the Widener Collection.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
