Cherry trees in full pale pink blossom spill down the slopes on either side of a post town, whose street of shops and inns runs beside a stream with green banks. A man leads a packhorse, bearers carry a palanquin and travellers pass lanterns and lettered signs, with a green mountain behind under a deep blue sky. A large red library seal is stamped in the sky of this impression. This is print sixty-eight of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō and later Kinjudō, c. 1835–38. Keisai Eisen began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige, who designed this sheet, completed it. Moriyama was the sixty-seventh station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; the English title is descriptive, and impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
