- Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji
In the early morning, travellers set out from the thatched inns of Isawa, their figures small among the roofs, while mist lies over the river and fields below. Above the mist, Mount Fuji stands dark against a pink dawn sky, its summit lightly touched with snow. The print is one of the ten additional views Hokusai added to his Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō), and like the others it is printed with black outlines. Isawa was a post town on the Kōshū road in Kai province. The soft pink sky and bands of mist give the print a calm, hushed feeling; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
