A deep blue river winds between green banks, and a cluster of tall pines stands on a rounded hillock against a yellow and orange evening sky. Travellers with hats and back-loads cross a wooden bridge at the right and walk the pale road at the left toward a few low roofs, with a dark blue mountain beyond and a steep green slope closing the view on the right. This is print twelve of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Kinjudō (Iseya Rihei), c. 1835–38. Keisai Eisen began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige, who designed this sheet, completed it. Shinmachi was the eleventh station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; the English title is descriptive, and impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
