A black locomotive and its carriages run in silhouette along an embankment across the foreground, trailing white smoke past two telegraph poles, while behind them green and yellow slopes climb toward the hill with the castle and church of Murnau under white clouds. Kandinsky painted this small picture on cardboard in 1909, the year Gabriele Münter bought a house in Murnau, where the couple spent long stretches until 1914. The railway ran below the house, and the subject is a rare touch of modern life in his work of these years. The flat silhouette of the train against bright colour shows how far he had already gone in treating a scene as a pattern of coloured shapes. The painting stayed with Münter and came to the Lenbachhaus in Munich with her gift of 1957; the museum lists it as Railway near Murnau.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
