A sudden downpour sweeps across the picture in long grey lines, and travellers crowd under the thatched roof of a small roadside shrine beside a huge tree, peering out from beneath their hats. Two bearers dash toward the shelter with a palanquin wrapped in a straw cover, and far behind, a man and a packhorse pass as dark silhouettes in the rain. This is print forty of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō and later Kinjudō in 1835 or 1836. Keisai Eisen began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige, who designed this sheet, completed it. Suhara was the thirty-ninth station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; the English title is descriptive, and impressions vary in colour and condition.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

Rain greys and pale straw with dark green leaves and touches of indigo and red, for a study, hallway or home office at 24×36 in black. It pairs with Hiroshige's Shōno: Driving Rain for two of his storm scenes on the road.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.

Framing. Exhibition posters sit best in a slim black frame with no mat — the typeset margin is the mat.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The exhibition-poster edition sets the complete image above typography designed in-house.
Is Suhara: Sudden Shower in the public domain?
Yes. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by The Cleveland Museum of Art (impression 1924.970; many other impressions exist).
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or natural wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Suhara: Sudden Shower painted, and in what medium?
Suhara: Sudden Shower dates from 1835 or 1836 and was made in woodblock print; ink and colour on paper; the original measures 25.4 × 36.2 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pair. For Suhara: Sudden Shower we'd choose 24×36.
