A steep, dark headland juts into the blue water of Lake Hamana, with small boats moving past it and a white Fuji far off at the right beyond a range of grey peaks. In the foreground a row of red-brown stakes stands in the shallows, and tall reed screens rise on the green shore among young pines. The print is number thirty-one in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Maisaka, the thirtieth station, stood on the eastern shore of Lake Hamana. Imagiri, meaning newly cut, is the name of the channel to the sea opened when an earthquake broke through the sandbar in 1498; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
