A large round window cut in a dark wall frames a bright view of the river, with a plum branch in bloom reaching up through the opening and a ferry boat passing below. Through the window the far bank stretches away with reeds, woods and a distant mountain, and a line of geese crosses the pale sky. The print is number thirty-six in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the eighth month of 1857. Hiroshige looks out from Massaki toward the woods of the Suijin shrine, the companion of the previous view in the series. The strong circle against the deep indigo of the wall makes this one of the most graphic designs of the set; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
