Two long ferryboats lie drawn up on a sandbar in the foreground, a boatman standing in one with his pole and another sitting under a wide hat. Across the next channel, passengers and porters gather on the far bank where more boats wait, and a line of trees fades into grey mist behind them. The print is number twenty-nine in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Near Mitsuke, the twenty-eighth station, the road crossed the broad Tenryū River, which ran in more than one channel and was crossed by ferry; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
