A dark blue mountain rises behind a bright yellow-green meadow, its summit edged with pink clouds against a teal sky, while the small houses of a village in red, white and orange cluster at the bottom among dark trees. The forms are flattened and the colours set side by side without blending. Jawlensky painted this small landscape on hardboard in 1910 in Murnau, the Bavarian market town where he and Marianne von Werefkin worked alongside Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter in these summers. The Murnau landscapes, painted outdoors in pure colour with dark outlines, were central to the group's shift away from description. The painting was with the Curt Valentin Gallery in New York by 1954, was acquired by the lawyer Ralph F. Colin and his wife in 1955, and was given by them to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1973.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
