A large figure in a purple robe, wearing a crown of fern leaves and gilt horns, strides across a temple veranda holding an enormous wooden rice paddle, framed by a red pillar on the left. Behind him the hill drops away to Edo Bay, scattered with white sails under a rose horizon. The inscription at the left identifies him as the messenger of Bishamon on the third day of the first month, a figure from a New Year ceremony at the Atago shrine. The print is number twenty-one in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the eighth month of 1857. Mount Atago was one of the high points of the city and a famous lookout over the bay; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
