A troupe of street dancers in white robes gathers beneath a great fringed umbrella in pale blue and red, moving along a busy shopping street, while porters and townspeople in straw hats pass on either side. Behind them the merchants' shops hang deep blue curtains with large white marks. The print is number forty-four in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the eighth month of 1858. Nihonbashi Itchōme, the first block of the main street south of the bridge, was one of the busiest commercial streets of Edo. Hiroshige fills the sheet with figures and patterns, closer to a festival scene than a landscape; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
