Ox carts piled high with bales and dark bundles roll along a road between thatched teahouses, their big pink-red wheels turning under small blue awnings. At the left, people eat and talk in an open shop, and in front of it the clear water of the Hashirii spring bubbles up from the ground. The print is number fifty-four in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Ōtsu, the fifty-third and last station before Kyoto, stood on the shore of Lake Biwa, and the Hashirii teahouses lay on the hill road between Ōtsu and the capital; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
