Slender young trees stand in the foreground of a flat Dutch field, their trunks and leaves sketched in thin, quick strokes, while behind them a band of dark green meadow and a line of distant trees run beneath a heavy grey-violet sky. The palette is muted, browns, greens and greys, and the paint is laid on loosely over paper. Mondrian made it around 1907, in the years when he painted the low countryside around Amsterdam in a manner that still owed much to the Hague School, before the bright colour of his Domburg summers. Even here the picture is built from horizontals and verticals, the trunks standing against the low horizon. The painting was given to The Cleveland Museum of Art by the American painter Frank Stella.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
