The long red-and-yellow wall of the Sanjūsangendō hall runs diagonally across the sheet, seen from above, with a broad grey forecourt below and a road of small figures and teahouses beyond. Past the pines, the water of the lumberyards stretches into the distance, covered in floating timber. The print is number sixty-nine in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the eighth month of 1857. The Fukagawa hall was built in imitation of the Sanjūsangendō in Kyoto, and its long veranda was used for archery contests. Hiroshige's steep diagonal makes the building feel even longer than it was; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A bold diagonal of vermilion and yellow against soft greys and blues, for a hallway, home office or long wall at 16×24 in black. It pairs with The Fukagawa Lumberyards, its neighbour across the water.
