Monet's wooden footbridge at Giverny, seen head-on with the pond, its lilies and the reflected willows filling the canvas below. In 1893 Monet, a passionate gardener, bought land with a pond near his house, saying he wanted something for the pleasure of the eye and also for motifs to paint. In 1899 he began a series of eighteen views of the bridge and completed twelve that summer, including this one. Most of the group are horizontal; the upright format here is unusual and gives the water lilies and their reflections more room than the bridge itself. The painting entered the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1929 with the bequest of Louisine Havemeyer. It shows Monet at fifty-nine, his early struggles behind him, turning the garden he had designed into the subject that would occupy the rest of his life.
