A windmill stands on a ruined bastion above a broad moat, its sails lit against a dark sky as the last sun breaks through from the right; below, a woman washes linen at the water's edge and a ferry approaches. The painting is dated to about 1645 to 1648 and is Rembrandt's largest and most famous landscape, a mood picture rather than a view of a particular place. Painters noticed how each of the four sails is set in a different tonal relation to the sky, light on dark, dark on light, light on light, dark on dark. It belonged to the dukes of Orléans in Paris, went to London in 1792 with their Dutch pictures, then hung at Bowood with the Marquesses of Lansdowne until Peter A. B. Widener bought it in 1911. Its attribution was questioned for decades and has since been restored. It is in the Widener Collection at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
