A huge carp streamer in black and cream fills the foreground, its round blue eye and scales seen up close as it swims in the wind, and far below lies the Surugadai district, with more carp streamers and banners rising over the roofs, a bridge, and a white Fuji on the horizon. The print is number forty-eight in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the fifth month of 1857. Carp streamers were flown for the Boys' Festival on the fifth day of the fifth month, and the carp, which swims upstream, stood for strength and perseverance. Surugadai was a district of samurai houses above the Kanda River. It is one of the best-known designs in the series; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
