Thomas More, lawyer, scholar and royal councillor, sits half-length before a green curtain in a black coat with fur collar and deep red velvet sleeves, holding a folded paper; across his shoulders lies the gold collar of SS, the Tudor livery chain marking his service to the king, with a Tudor rose pendant. Holbein painted the panel in London in 1527, during his first stay in England, which he began with a letter of recommendation from Erasmus to More, in whose circle he was welcomed. The portrait is unsparing in detail, down to the stubble on More's chin. More rose to become Lord Chancellor in 1529, refused to accept Henry VIII as head of the English Church, and was executed in 1535; he was canonised in 1935. A related drawing is in the Royal Collection, and a copy hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, London. Holbein's portrait of More's whole family is lost. Henry Clay Frick bought this panel in 1912, and it hangs in the Frick Collection in New York.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
