Around a table a richly dressed young man studies his cards while the three people beside him fleece him: the courtesan in the middle signals with her eyes, the maid pours wine as cover, and the cheat on the left pulls an ace of diamonds from behind his back. The game is probably prime, an Italian ancestor of poker. Georges de La Tour painted it in Lorraine around 1636 to 1638 and signed it under the cheat's elbow, Georgius De La Tour fecit; a second version with an ace of clubs is in the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth. The arrangement of figures in two flat planes across a narrow table, the smooth bright flesh and the glances that carry the whole story descend from Caravaggio's card sharps by way of the Utrecht painters. The Louvre bought it in 1972 from the collector Pierre Landry, who had found it around 1926.
