A woman seated on a decorative halo turns her gaze to the evening sky, where a single star appears over a darkening landscape, her chin resting on her hand in reverie. Mucha designed the panel in Paris in 1898 as one of the four Arts, printed by F. Champenois and sold as a set of colour lithographs for the home. The series abandons the conventional symbols of the arts in favour of moods drawn from nature: Poetry is the quiet of dusk and the first star, Painting a flower, Music the song of birds, Dance the wind. The ornamental disc behind each figure, a halo borrowed from Byzantine icons and church mosaics, had become Mucha's trademark by this date. The Arts was one of the most popular of all his decorative series.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
