A fair-haired woman in a translucent gown stands with closed eyes among tall mauve irises, their sword-shaped leaves rising behind her the full height of the panel. Mucha designed the series The Flowers in Paris in 1898, and F. Champenois printed the four panels, Rose, Iris, Carnation and Lily, as colour lithographs intended to be framed and hung in the home rather than pasted on a wall. The iris, with its cool colour and languid form, is given the most dreamlike figure of the four. The panels show Mucha at his most naturalistic, with the flowers drawn carefully from life and only a thin decorative border. The set was a commercial success and was reissued in a reduced format with all four figures on one sheet. It is among the most reproduced of all Art Nouveau images.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
