Bathsheba sits naked after her bath, holding the letter from King David that will summon her to the palace, while a servant dries her foot. The story is told in the Second Book of Samuel, but Rembrandt stripped away everything painters usually included, the distant tower, the watching king, the attendants, and left a single life-size woman absorbed in a decision she cannot refuse. Painted in 1654 on a square canvas, it is one of the most direct nudes in Dutch art and also one of the most sympathetic. The model is often thought to have been Hendrickje Stoffels, his companion at the time. X-rays show her head was originally held more upright, and the canvas has been trimmed at the top and left. It came to the Louvre in 1869 with the bequest of Louis La Caze, and Kenneth Clark called it Rembrandt's greatest painting of the nude.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The exhibition-poster edition sets the complete image above typography designed in-house.
Is Bathsheba at Her Bath (Bathsheba with King David's Letter) in the public domain?
Yes. Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Musée du Louvre.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; the two larger sizes are also offered framed. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Bathsheba at Her Bath (Bathsheba with King David's Letter) painted, and in what medium?
Bathsheba at Her Bath (Bathsheba with King David's Letter) dates from 1654 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 142 × 142 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
For a standard three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 inches reads as a single statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pairing. The print's proportions follow the original, so a landscape-format painting is wider than it is tall.
