Rembrandt stands with palette, brushes and maulstick in hand, a fur-lined robe over a red garment and a white cap on his head, one hand planted on his hip. Behind him two large arcs of circles are drawn on the wall, and nobody has settled what they mean. The painting dates from about 1665 to 1669, the final years of his life, and is one of more than forty painted self-portraits. Much of it is handled with startling freedom: the hands and palette are barely sketched, lines are scratched into the wet paint of the moustache and collar, and it carries no signature or date. X-rays show he first painted himself turned further to the right, at work on a canvas at the picture's edge, before simplifying the pose into this frontal, monumental stance. Joshua Reynolds admired its colour despite its unfinished manner, and Fragonard painted a copy. It hangs at Kenwood House in London.
