Six men look up from a table as if the viewer had just opened the door. Five of them are the sampling officials of the Amsterdam drapers' guild, the wardens who tested the quality of dyed cloth against samples and stamped each bolt with lead seals; the sixth, standing bareheaded behind them, is their servant Frans Hendricksz Bel. Rembrandt painted the group in 1662, after his bankruptcy had pushed him out to a rented house on the Rozengracht, and the commission showed that the city's institutions still wanted him. He set the viewpoint low, so the men loom slightly above the viewer, and spread a Persian carpet and an open sample book across the table. The painting hung in the guild's Staalhof until 1771 and has been on loan from the City of Amsterdam to the Rijksmuseum since 1808. It is often called his last great group portrait.
