A couple dance beneath a chestnut tree at a country inn, the woman smiling straight out at the viewer with a fan in her hand, a straw hat fallen to the ground and the remains of a meal on the table behind. The models were Renoir's friend Paul Lhote and Aline Charigot, who later became the painter's wife. The figures are life-size and fill the tall, narrow canvas, part of a project of dancing couples that Renoir began in 1882 for the dealer Paul Durand-Ruel and completed in 1883 alongside Dance in the City and Dance at Bougival. After his trip to Italy in 1881 Renoir was drawing away from Impressionism toward firmer outlines, and the clear contours here show it, while the warm yellows and reds keep the mood festive. The French state bought the painting in 1979, and it belongs to the Musée d'Orsay.
