A group of friends linger over the end of lunch on the balcony of the Maison Fournaise, a restaurant on the Seine at Chatou, under a striped awning, with bottles and fruit on the white cloth and the river glimpsed through the railing. Renoir painted it in 1880 and 1881, and the sitters are identifiable: his future wife Aline Charigot plays with a small dog at the left, the painter Gustave Caillebotte sits backwards on a chair at the right, and the restaurant owner's children lean on the rail. He worked on it over several months, posing friends when he could get them. It was shown at the seventh Impressionist exhibition in 1882. Duncan Phillips bought it in 1923 for his new museum in Washington, where it remains.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A long lunch under a striped awning belongs in a dining room or kitchen, over the table or sideboard at 24×36, where the white cloth, bottles and fruit echo the room. Natural wood on cream or soft green; it is a warm, sociable picture.
