A couple waltz under the trees of an open-air café at Bougival, a riverside town west of Paris where city dwellers and Impressionists alike came to relax. The man in the straw hat is an amateur boatman; his partner wears a red bonnet trimmed with purple fruit, and the touch of their bare hands and their flushed cheeks give the scene its charge. The floor is littered with cigarette ends, burnt matches and a dropped posy. Renoir, the son of a tailor and a dressmaker, delighted in the details of contemporary dress. The painting is one of three nearly life-size dancing couples he made in 1883, with Dance in the City and Dance in the Country, and it is signed and dated at the lower right. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston bought it in 1937, and it has been one of the museum's best-loved works ever since.
