Parisians of every class take the air on an island in the Seine on a Sunday afternoon: a woman with a parasol and a monkey on a leash, a man in a top hat, soldiers, a girl in white, rowers and a trumpeter, all frozen in profile or full face like figures on a frieze. Seurat worked on the enormous canvas for two years, from 1884 to 1886, making dozens of oil studies on site and then building the picture in his studio from tiny dots and dashes of pure colour meant to blend in the eye, the technique later called Pointillism. He showed it at the last Impressionist exhibition in 1886, where it divided opinion and launched Neo-Impressionism. He added a painted border of dots in 1889. The painting has been in the Art Institute of Chicago since 1926.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A wide, frieze-like Sunday in dots of pure colour that holds a long wall: over a sofa or dining sideboard at 24×36. Natural wood on white or soft green keeps the colour clear; it is calm and takes a central place without shouting.
