Working men and boys rest on the bank of the Seine at Asnières on a hazy summer afternoon, one boy up to his waist in the water with his hands cupped to his mouth, while the railway bridge and the chimneys of the Clichy gasworks sit on the horizon. Seurat painted the three-metre canvas in 1884, before he was twenty-five, as a grand statement for the Salon, which rejected it; he showed it instead at the newly formed Salon des Artistes Indépendants. Unlike the Impressionists he worked in the studio from a long campaign of oil sketches and conté drawings, and the figures have the stillness of sculpture, each absorbed in himself. The picture puzzled his contemporaries and was only widely admired long after his death at thirty-one. Bought for the National Gallery in London by the Courtauld Fund in 1924, it is one of the two great compositions of his short life.
